Scarlet Grey becomes Dear Boy

Message from Ben Grey:

” Keith, Pete, Richard and I are going to be playing a show in L.A. on May 20th at the 3 Clubs in Hollywood. It’s a free show and it’s 21+… But we’re not going to be playing it as “SG…” And so I’m writing to you and some of our other really important Grey Family members, because it’s a very special event and we wanted to make sure you knew what was going on. We love you and consider you family, so we don’t want to just drop some crazy information on you without being there to help explain it.

Scarlet Grey is not breaking up… Far from it. But after Danny, Cole, Rick and Alix all moved on, we just felt it wasn’t right to put out this next record under the “SG” banner… Those guys influenced those records so much, it wouldn’t be fair to them or to the family to call this record SG.

But the most important thing and the reason I’m writing to you is to let you know The Grey Family isn’t going ANYWHERE… I think you know that you’re the whole reason we even make this music… It’s for you guys. You’ve been so loyal and supportive this whole way through. We really hope you’ll be able to understand that this is a step we all truly felt we needed to take. So, for this next evolution we’re going to be called “Dear Boy.”

I’m sure this will take some getting used to… But we promise you, the new record won’t disappoint. We also promise that we haven’t “changed.” We’re the same guys and it’s the same family… We’ll just be filed under “D” on your itunes from now on.

I hope you’ll share this next phase of The Grey Family, because we believe it’s going to be insanely exciting and we don’t want to do it without you. ”

And if you can make it to the show on May 20th… We’re going to play the new record for the first time and some songs I’m sure you know

Flannel Mouth “Pull In Your Horns”

Photo: Kristen Krupps

On March 8th Flannel Mouth released their EP “Pull In Your Horn” under SwitchBitch Records. Coming from Peoria, a small town in Illinois; Flannel Mouth show that they have nothing to envy to the big city bands. Luke Myers, the singer defined his band’s music as “Western infused punk-rock with a little bit of Brand New” but you can also feel the influence of Murder by Scene and Johnny Cash. The EP starts with “I’m a Sucker for Kay Commercials” in which, you can hear a wire telephone along with the calm singing of the singer Luke Myers. Following the introduction, the riff of the loud guitar start coming in. The following track “The Sinner” is an echo to the end of the first song. The constant guitar riff gives a lot of energy to it and reminds me of a chase against the devil “Passing Cops” is probably the calmest song of the EP. Even though you can still hear the distinctive sound of Flannel Mouth, the melodic singing and the slow introduction give a slower pace to it. At the end, the guitar riffs start coming in and the tempo raise. This track is my favorite of the EP because I really enjoyed the change of tempo.“The World Awaits with Eyes Half-Opened” starts with a long guitar solo before the singing starts. The guitar riffs have a cleaner sound than on the rest of the EP. The last track “Sing for us Tragic” is a perfect way to close “Pull In Your Horns”. The beginning of the song is slow and has a darker sound in the singing voice than the previous tracks. The sound at the end of the song is perfect to complete the opening song.

“Pull in Your Horns” is perfectly put together to create an EP with a melodic story. If you’re looking for some dirty Rock’ n ’Roll and like Murder by Scene, The Forecast or Brand New, you’ll love “Pull In Your Horn”.

The Native Sibling Interview

The Native Sibling is composed of you and your brother. Have you been in a band together before?

Our musical pursuits had always been rather separate until now. I(Kaylee) have come from many years of classical and jazz piano training while Ryan has been in many hardcore, alternative and rock bands before. Around four years ago I started writing songs and playing guitar and it was refreshing to start writing on a foreign instrument. We have both been putting song ideas to one another for years, but our styles had never found cohesion until these tunes came about. A few years back we recorded an unreleased cover of  ‘Can the Circle be Unbroken’ and in retrospect I guess that was an unofficial start.

How did you decided to create the band? And where does the name come from?

Last year I spent living in Ireland and amongst many realizations came to the fact that both music and family are of the utmost importance in my life. We constantly had joked about starting a band, but a serious tone was always underlying. Myself coming back to the states and Ryan having a few weeks to spare, we both recognized that now was the time to make an attempt to make music that was ours. The name stems from the fact that we are siblings, however, the Native Sibling draws on the idea of where our roots, family, traditions, and ideology come from and how they shape our view of the world. In many ways we are where we come from, but to be shaped through experience and those who are different than us is also inevitable.

How would you describe your music?

The best general classification is folk, however, we hope our music can be characterized by moving vocal melodies and storytelling lyrics.

What bands did you grow up listening to?

Some of the  ‘favorites’ include Ingrid Michaelson and Brandi Carlile. We both draw a lot of inspiration from newer artists such as Bon Iver, Delta Spirit, and Augustana. The older artists include the likes of Neil Young, Emmylou Harris and Kris Kristofferson.

Where do you get the inspiration to write your songs?

Most often I lend inspiration from conversations that I have or experiences that I have been through. Having a mental image while singing a song draws an evident emotion and truth in the lyrics, which we hope people can relate to.

Your EP will come out soon. Tell me more about it

We recorded most tracks during a week-long session in Santa Monica last summer with our good friend John Zambricki. The EP is a unique mixture of tunes, but centers on the idea of ‘home.’ Home is really not a place, but rather a comfort and peace that we can draw on anywhere or with anyone.

What are your plans for this year?

In this next year I will  graduate with a degree in Hydrology from UC Davis. We then hope to move forward with our music by practicing up and hitting the road. Recording our next batch of songs that are already in the works is in our near future as time allows. We are both excited about that process as this EP has been a great experience up to this point. Besides that there are still many unknowns, but that’s part of the thrill.

Flannel Mouth’s Interview

Photo: Kristen Krupps

L: I’m Luke Myers, and I play guitar and sing.

R: Hi, my name’s Ryan Batalon, and I’m an alcoholic. But I play bass in the free time.

Z: I [Zachary Hartman] play the stringy thing.

T: I’m Tyler Owen and I play the drums, but don’t sing in the band.

What brought the band together?

L: The Backstreet Boys; we [Luke & Tyler] used to dance to Backstreet Boys and thought we’d start our own band. Pop turned into Punk, turned into Experimental, turned into whatever we are now.

How did you come up with the band’s name?

L: Looking on the internet for hours and hours for western-themed sayings in the 1800s. It means, basically, somebody with a sharp tongue.

How would you describe your music?

R: We are kitten djent-djent with a side of spaghetti.

L: Western-infused punk rock with a little bit of Brand New in there.

R: We’re listed on iTunes as American Underground, I think.

What bands did you grow up listening to?

Z: Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Soundtrack. It was the first CD I ever bought with my own money, and AC/DC; I love 80s stuff. Pretty much everything.

L: Brand New and Modest Mouse, Green Day, and Tim Armstrong: “echo echo echo.”

R: Offsping and H2O.

Talking about non-musical influences, what would you say inspires you?

L: Uhm, movies, people, and the bible. The bible first.

Z: And nonmusical jazz.

Your debut album “Pull in Your Horns” came out on March 8th.  Please tell me more about it. What is the concept behind it?

T: It’s not a concept as much as a theme, I suppose, but we wanted to tie it all together musically, get rid of our old compositions, and show our dexterity as writers. It’s mostly a lead-up for the full-length we’re working on.

Where do you get the inspiration to write your songs? Who writes the lyrics/music?

L: We all pretty much write the music, and I write the lyrics. Because I struggle through life, ya know? Usually they’re about life struggles. Mostly I just want to make people cringe and not like me very much. I want people to be scared to approach me.

What are your plans for this year?

R: Party. Get drunk.

Z: Play shows, finish our new music, and shove it down your earholes.

T: Hopefully we’ll get to play a couple tours by the end of the year, make some good and/or helpful friends around the country, and not crash our van.
